Taiping is home to many of Malaysia’s firsts prior to independence and is well known for its well-preserved colonial architectures. This quiet town is the home of the first lake garden in Malaysia which was established in 1880. The thing about Taiping is that it holds many hidden treasures that even locals may not know until and unless they go scouting for it. Here are the few treasures of Taiping you can explore.

Maxwell Hill

Hike up Maxwell Hill

Bukit Larut overlooks Taiping's scenic Lake Gardens and the old town of Taiping. There are only two ways to get to Maxwell Hill's summit. Take a government-owned Land Rover or take a 10-kilometre hike to the summit. Walking is also a possibility, as we have done it ourselves.

This highland area is known as Maxwell Hill because it was founded in 1884 by William Edward Maxwell, a British Assistant Resident in Perak. The bungalows that can still be seen here were originally built for British plantation owners and their wives to avoid the tropical weather that is more prevalent in the lowlands.

Get In Touch With Nature At Taiping Lake Gardens

The Taiping Lake Gardens was created on a deserted tin mine in 1880, making it the very first lake garden in Malaysia. The lake garden is the idea of Colonel Robert Sandilands Frowd Walker. There are rows of beautiful shady Angsana trees planted along the lake, which when you look from afar it’ll seem like the branches of the trees are reaching out to touch the lake water. If you’re not a hiker but still want to experience nature in Taiping, add on the lake garden to your “Must Visit List”.
