The district of Kerian is the administrative district of Perak. It occupies the northwest corner of Perak, bordering the states of Penang and Kedah to the north; the main town of Parit Buntar is situated just 37 km southeast of George Town, the capital of Penang. Due to its proximity to Penang, much of Kerian is also part of Greater Penang, Malaysia's second-largest conurbation. The district is one of the major rice-growing areas of Perak.

Orang Utan Island (Bukit Merah)

Nestled in the idyllic setting of Bukit Merah Laketown Resort, Orang Utan Island is one of the best rehabilitation and conservation centres in the world. The island is a reference centre for the endangered Bornean orang utan. The Orang Utan Island is one of Malaysia’s most popular tourist attractions. After its development in 2000, orang utan Island transitioned from a sanctuary where visitors experienced first-hand orang utan knowledge and education, to a recognised conservation facility and a referral centre for endangered Bornean orang utan.

Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary

Bird watchers, get your binoculars ready! Nestled within the Matang Forest Reserve is the Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary. Kelumpang Island is a valuable breeding area for waterbirds and nesting ground for resident birds. This humble fishing village is only 50 kilometres away from Taiping covers both the intertidal and mangrove habitat.
